This week in music:
The 2012 Billboard Music Awards took place on Sunday, May 20 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Artists from all genres of music came out to be a part of the ceremony, with a few walking away with several awards when all was said and done. The biggest winner of the night was English songstress Adele, who won countless awards including Top Artist, Top Billboard 200 Album, Top Digital Artist, Top Radio Artist, and many more. Dance group LMFAO won several awards as well in recognition of their hit singles “Party Rock Anthem” and “Sexy And I Know It”. Other big winners of the night included Coldplay, Lady Gaga, Lil’ Wayne, and Justin Bieber.
The “Queen of Disco” has been laid to rest. The funeral service for Donna Summer, who passed on May 17, was held this past Wednesday. The funeral service was held in Nashville, Tennessee, where Summer has resided since 1995. Summer, famous for hits such as “Last Dance” and “I Feel Love”, passed away at the age of 63 due to complications from lung cancer. Summer was survived by her husband (Bruce Sadano) and three daughters.
Acclaimed hip hop artist Lupe Fiasco released his latest single “Around My Way” this week, causing a huge stir in the hip hop community. The song, which is the first single from Lupe’s forthcoming Food & Liquor 2 album, has apparently angered famed producer Pete Rock. “Around My Way” heavily samples Pete Rock & CL Smooth’s “T.R.O.Y. (They Reminisce Over You)”, a classic record which was dedicated to a deceased friend of the same name. As is to be expected, Pete Rock and his dedicated fan base showed distaste in the record, largely via social networking site Twitter. While this news is still making headlines within the hip hop community, it is believed that the issue has been settled between the parties involved.
